Da Sweet Blood of Jesus

Saturday, October 26, 2024, 7:30 p.m., Dryden Theatre

(Spike Lee, US 2014, 123 min., DCP)

Spike Lee turned to his own fans on Kickstarter to finance this remake of Bill Gunn’s Ganja & Hess (1973). Wealthy anthropologist Dr. Hess Green (Stephen Tyrone Williams) acquires an Ashanti dagger for a museum exhibition, but keeps it at his house before turning it over. When unstable houseguest Lafayette Hightower (Elvis Nolasco) grabs the dagger during the night and stabs Hess, he is shocked to awaken later - with a thirst for blood. As Hess explores his new vampiric lifestyle, Hightower’s ex-wife Ganja (Zaraah Abrahams) arrives, looking for money she is owed. Hess is attracted to Ganja and decides to seduce her into his new way of life.
