Lotna on 35mm

Wednesday, October 23, 2024, 7:30 p.m., Dryden Theatre

(Andrzej Wajda, Poland 1959, 90 min., 35mm, Polish with English subtitles)

Director Andrzej Wajda returns to the theater of World War II for this story of Poland’s struggle against the increasingly insurmountable German army. Lotna is a magnificent specimen of Arabian horse, owned by a wealthy nobleman now too old to ride her. The cavalry is still an important part of Poland’s defense, so Lotna is given to a captain of the Polish cavalry, but she is so beautiful that other soldiers in the unit covet her. As the war progresses and German tanks are introduced to the conflict, the odds become overwhelming, but the Polish army fights bravely, rallying around the great white thoroughbred.
