Memoria

Saturday, October 1, 2022, 7:30 p.m., Dryden Theatre

(Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Colombia/Thailand/France/Germany/Mexico/Qatar/UK/China/Switzerland 2021, 136 min., DCP, English and Spanish w/English subtitles)

There's a noise in the middle of the night. It is loud and unidentifiable. For the next two hours, it will recur time and time again. It always sounds the same, but it never becomes more easily describable. Jessica (Tilda Swinton) seems to be the only person who can hear it. Is it only for her, and can it even be explained?

Palme d’Or–winning director Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Cemetery of Splendor, which screens at the Dryden next month) has crafted a uniquely cinematic experience with a uniquely cinematic release plan. The film will only be available for theaters—never on home video release or on streaming services—and it will play in only a handful of cities at any given time, creating a rolling worldwide traveling theatrical experience. The soundtrack of the film is so integral to the experience, as is the freedom from distraction, that the director insisted the film only appear in this way. At the Dryden Theatre, you will be able to experience the film and its soundtrack in its most immersive form, as a Dolby Digital 7.1 track. This mix features three front channels as well as two each side- and rear-surround channels that put you in the center of Jessica’s mind and soundscape. The ultimate cinematic experience in Rochester’s greatest cinematic venue is an opportunity not to be missed!
