(Spike Lee, US 2012, 121 min., DCP)
In Red Hook, Brooklyn, Bishop Enoch Rouse (Clarke Peters) tries to keep his storefront parish, Li’l Peace of Heaven Baptist Church, afloat. Into his life comes his 13-year-old grandson, Flik (Jules Brown), whom he has never met. Flik comes from Atlanta where he attends private school, claims to be a vegan, and sees the entire world through his iPad screen which, as the Bishop says, puts a wall between himself and life. Coping with a situation he doesn’t want to be in, Flik comes into conflict with everyone, including his only friend in Brooklyn, Chazz (Toni Lysaith). But revelations of dark secrets stain the entire experience, putting into question who you can trust. Look for a cameo by Lee himself as his character “Mookie” from Do the Right Thing.
