Workshop for six participants

Ambrotypes and tintypes are the hottest alternative processes used in fine art photography today. In this intensive five-day workshop, participants will be guided through the basics of making these unique positive wet-collodion images by Mark Osterman, internationally recognized as a modern master of the collodion process.

Participants will learn how to cut and clean glass plates, coat glass and metal plates with collodion, and sensitize, expose, and process images. Tinting and special burnishing techniques pioneered by Osterman will also be taught.

The opportunity to view rare, original ambrotypes, tintypes, and original collodion-era cameras from the George Eastman Museum collection makes this workshop a particularly fulfilling experience. Each participant will receive a copy of the updated Scully & Osterman basic collodion manual, which includes formulas and sources of supply, as well as additional wet plate–era readings from the research library.

Audience: Limited to six, this five-day workshop is suitable for fine art photographers, educators, and anyone interested in the evolution of photography. No experience necessary.

Cancellation Policy: Withdrawal from the workshop 30 days before the session start date will receive a refund, minus a $100 processing fee. No refunds will be given for cancellations made less than 30 days before a workshop start date. If the workshop is canceled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire class will be fully refunded. The George Eastman Museum is not responsible for airline ticket cancellation costs or fees.
