Advanced International Archival Training and Education

Since its founding in 1947, the George Eastman Museum has welcomed conservators, archivists, curators, and scholars seeking advanced research and training opportunities in the areas of conservation, preservation, and collection management of photographs, moving images, the technology related to these disciplines, and the legacy of George Eastman.

With the exception of The L. Jeffrey Selznick School for Film Preservation, the museum has no formal training programs currently available. However, advanced training and education in these fields may be possible by creating independent study modules after consultation with relevant curators at the museum. The museum welcomes collaboration with other educational institutions to further knowledge and best practices for the preservation of photographs, camera technologies, and photographic histories.

Museum professionals worldwide with degrees in film and photographic history, museum studies, archival studies, or related fields, and who have demonstrated experience in the field, may inquire about advanced training opportunities in the departments of Photography, Technology, Moving Image, the George Eastman Collection, and the Richard and Ronay Menschel Library. The museum currently does not have funding opportunities to provide support for these opportunities.

As a designated sponsor under the U.S. Department of State’s Exchange Visitor Program, the museum is able to offer J-1 visas to allow Research Scholars and Short- Term Scholars from abroad to visit the museum for extended periods of research, training, and education. For information on Research Scholar and Short-Term Research Scholar J-1 visas please visit: j1visa.state.gov/programs/research-scholar/ and j1visa.state.gov/programs/short-term-scholar/
