Bea Nettles: Stonecipher
Stonecipher
2011
Bound volume with electrostatic prints
George Eastman Museum, Richard and Ronay Menschel Library
In 2010, Nettles began photographing tombstones featuring surnames that are also ordinary words. She uses this now vast collection of photographs to assemble stories and poems, which she publishes as books. The works explore the intersection of history and language through universal themes such as seasonal change, war and peace, and the cardinal directions.
