Celebrate America’s Favorite Pastime this summer at the George Eastman Museum

A special screening of Bull Durham (1988) followed by Q&A with writer/director and former Rochester Red Wing Ron Shelton on July 6 to kick off film series

Rochester, N.Y., June 30, 2017—The George Eastman Museum will be celebrating baseball this summer with America’s Favorite Pastime, a film series of twelve features spanning nearly ninety years of cinema history. As part of the series, which is presented in collaboration with the Rochester Red Wings, the Eastman Museum will host two special events: a screening of Bull Durham (1988) with writer/director and former Rochester Red Wing Ron Shelton in person on July 6, and a screening of Field of Dreams (1989) with writer/director Phil Alden Robinson in person on August 4.

“With this series, we will not only celebrate baseball’s real-life heroes, but also confront its problematic history,” said Jurij Meden, Curator of Film Exhibitions, George Eastman Museum. “We will revel in the nostalgia it provides, look into the modern game and its effects on Latin American youth, as well as enjoy some of its all-time classics.”

In conjunction with America’s Favorite Pastime, photographer Tabitha Soren will be speaking in the Dryden Theatre on Wednesday, August 9, at 6 p.m. about her book Fantasy Life. In 2002, Soren began photographing a group of minor league draft picks for the Oakland A’s—young men coming into the major league farm system straight from high school or college. Since then, she has followed the players through their baseball lives, an alternate reality of long bus rides, on-field injuries, friendships and marriages entered and exited, constant motion, and very hard work, often for very little return. Fifteen years after that first shoot, Soren’s series and book Fantasy Life provides a selection of these stories, gathering together a richly textured series of photographs taken on the field and behind the scenes at games, along with commentaries by each of the players and memorabilia from their lives. Fantasy Life may be purchased in the Eastman Museum Store, and a book signing will follow the talk. The event is free to members, $10 general, $5 students.
