Frank Sinatra’s dramatic roles on the big screen at Dryden Theatre

Film series features From Here to Eternity, The Man With The Golden Arm, Some Came Running, and The Manchurian Candidate

Rochester, N.Y., August 17, 2012—The Dryden Theatre at George Eastman House pays tribute to singer/actor “ole blue eyes,” Frank Sinatra, in a four-film series screening in September. The selection of films highlights some of Sinatra’s greatest dramatic performances

After initial forays into the movies in several big-budget color musicals, Sinatra sought more demanding roles as his music career began to dwindle in the early 1950s. Sinatra’s on-screen portrayals in the Dryden series include his Academy Award®-winning performance in From Here to Eternity, for which The New York Post applauded Frank Sinatra, noting, “He proves he is an actor by playing the luckless Maggio with a kind of doomed gaiety that is both real and immensely touching."

“More than just a crooner and an idol of the bobby-soxers, Frank Sinatra also fashioned an impressive and successful acting career,” said Lori Donnelly, Eastman House film programmer.  “As an actor, he strove for spontaneity and energy; he was an instinctive performer who was at his best playing troubled characters.

Other featured roles include struggling drug addict in Otto Preminger’s The Man with the Golden Arm and a former Korean War POW with a hidden past in The Manchurian Candidate, for which Hollywood rumor still holds that Sinatra removed the film from distribution after the John F. Kennedy assassination in November 1963.
