Garden tours begin May 1; Garden Vibes concerts in July and August
Rochester, N.Y., April 17, 2012—The historic gardens of George Eastman House open for the season on Tuesday, May 1, and will remain open through September. Here are some ways to enjoy the gardens this season.
Historic Garden Tours
Historic Landscape Garden Tours begin Tuesday, May 1, and continue through September. Docents lead the tours, sharing historic photographs and details about the landscape during George Eastman’s residency, 1905 to 1932. In May and September tours will be offered once per day: 11:30 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. In the months of June, July, and August the garden tours will take place at 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and at 3 p.m. Sunday. The garden tours follow the daily docent-led house tours. The tours are included with museum admission. Private tours are available for groups of 20 or more by appointment. Eastman House Spring Plant Sale
The general public is invited to buy perennials and woody plants that have grown from seeds or cuttings from the historic Eastman House gardens. The annual Historic Plant Sale takes place behind the Rock Garden, located off University Avenue. This year’s sale is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 12. Free admission. (A fall plant sale will be offered Saturday, Sept. 8.)
Garden Vibes Concerts
Four garden concerts will take place in July and August in the Townson Terrace Garden and on the East Vista lawn, featuring catered concessions and children’s activities. The Garden Vibes concerts are Thursday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. (gates open at 5 p.m.). Tickets are $12 for adults (includes museum admission); $5 ages 13-18; and free for children ages 5-12. The 2012 schedule: July 12: Matuto; July 26: Herb Gross & the Invictas; Aug. 9: Hypnotic Clambake; and Aug. 23: Brave Combo. For more information, please visit www.eastmanhouse.org.
