Genesee Country Village & Museum and the Rochester Museum & Science Center will also be participating in Museum Day
Rochester, N.Y., September 6, 2019—The George Eastman Museum will be open to the public for FREE on Saturday, September 21, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. In the spirit of Smithsonian magazine’s Museum Day, the Eastman Museum is opening its doors to all visitors for the day to encourage the Rochester community to experience the exhibitions The Art of Warner Brothers Cartoons and Tanya Marcuse: Woven, and the History of Photography Gallery, as well as hands-on activities for all ages in the Discovery Room.
The whole museum, including the galleries and the historic mansion will be open for free to visitors, and the museum is offering the following free tours throughout the day:
- 10:30 a.m. & 2 p.m. Historic Mansion Tour
- 11 a.m. Gallery Tour in Sign Language (register in advance: firstname.lastname@example.org)
- 12 p.m. & 3:30 p.m. Garden Tour
- 1 p.m. Gallery Tour
In addition to free tours, the museum will present a free Focus 45 talk: Photography and the Joining of the Transcontinental Railroad: 150 Years at 12 p.m. in the Curtis Theatre. On May 10, 1869, Alfred A. Hart, Andrew Joseph Russell, and Charles Roscoe Savage each photographed the joining of the Union Pacific and Central Pacific Railroads at Promontory Point in the Utah Territory. The Golden Spike Ceremony marked the completion of the transcontinental railroad. For the 150th anniversary of this historic event, associate curator Heather A. Shannon will discuss the role photography played in the race to lay tracks across North America.
Museum Day is an annual celebration hosted by Smithsonian magazine where participating museums and cultural institutions across the country provide entry to anyone presenting a Museum Day ticket. The George Eastman Museum will be participating again this year, but visitors to the museum will not need to present a Museum Day Ticket, as all visitors will be admitted for free that day.
The George Eastman Museum is one of three local museums participating in this year’s Museum Day. The Genesee Country Village & Museum and the Rochester Museum & Science Center are offering free admission for the day as part of the program. For specific information on their hours and programming, visit gcv.org and rmsc.org.
