Rochester, N.Y., January 23, 2024—The George Eastman Museum has announced the winter/spring lineup for its Wish You Were Here lecture series. For over 20 years, this popular photography lecture series has brought artists and photojournalists to Rochester to share their stories and photographs from around the world. The 2024 series will kick off on Thursday, January 25 at 6 p.m., with photographer Gregory Halpern.
Internationally acclaimed, Rochester-based artist Gregory Halpern returns to the Wish You Were Here series on the occasion of his exhibition Gregory Halpern: 19 winters / 7 springs, on display in the Project Gallery through March 3, 2024. The result of two decades of grappling with the idea of his hometown of Buffalo, the exhibition is a profound rumination on history, the passage of time, the experience of contemporary life, and, above all, what it means to dwell in a particular place.
For his Wish You Were Here lecture, Picturing Place, Halpern will reflect on this body of work in light of his other projects that have looked at the complexity of places as disparate as Southern California, Omaha, Nebraska, and the Caribbean archipelago of Guadeloupe. Halpern will be available for a meet-and-greet after the program. Admission for the lecture is $10 for adults and free for students and museum members. The talk will be held in the museum’s Dryden Theatre and will be followed by a book signing in the museum’s Wolk Concourse. Halpern’s exhibition and accompanying film, April, will be open for viewing.
The Wish You Were Here series continues on Thursday, February 29 at 6 p.m., with American documentary photographer Susan Meiselas.
The final lecture in the series will be held on Thursday, March 7 at 6 p.m. with Chinese-American photographer and educator Baldwin Lee.
The Wish You Were Here photography lecture series is generously supported by museum member Dr. Thomas N. Tischer.
