Job Title: Assistant Gardener
Department: Landscape Department
Status and Working Hours: Full-Time 40 hours per week (Monday-Friday 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.)
FLSA Status & Pay Rate: Non-Exempt, $18.00 per hour
Start Date: Immediately
Additional hours and occasional weekend work is required for snow removal and special events such as museum plant sales and Dutch Connection (in February).
Overview:
Perform routine garden maintenance and assist the Landscape Manager with the supervision of interns and volunteers.
Responsibilities:
- Carry out historic and public garden maintenance.
- Maintain and repair tractors, power equipment, hand tools and irrigation systems.
- Work with, and supervise the work of, garden volunteer crews.
- Assist in installation of all landscape exhibitions.
- Support the Landscape Manager in plant health monitoring and record keeping.
- Update plant data on garden website (when launched).
- Snow removal from all institution walkways.
- General carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work.
- Additional responsibilities at the discretion of the Landscape Manager
Technology/Equipment/Tools
- Basic understanding and proficiency with Microsoft Office or Google Workspace
- Basic understanding and experience with carpentry, electrical and plumbing
- Advanced skills with chain saw and electric and hand pruners and shears for woody plant care
- Advanced knowledge of forklift and tractor/mower operations
- Advanced experience with garden hand and power tools
Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:
- Two year post-secondary school in horticulture or equivalent experience in horticulture.
- A minimum of 2 years public garden maintenance experience is desirable.
- Ability to complete tasks independently.
- Interact with visitors, members and staff in a welcoming professional manner.
Physical Activity
Outdoors a maximum of eight hours per day. Ability to lift/carry 50 pounds. Tasks require bending, stooping and kneeling, climbing, reaching, grasping, walking, seeing, hearing, and fine manipulation skills. Working on/with ladders, including step and extension types.
