The Architects

Saturday, October 28, 2017, 7:30 p.m., Dryden Theatre

(Die Architekten, Peter Kahane, East Germany 1990, 95 min., 35mm, German w/subtitles)

Director in Person. Architect Daniel Brenner is already in his late thirties when he finally gets a chance to build something. He energetically assembles a team of old friends, but their utopian dreams of an alternative housing project promptly cause trouble. The Architects is considered the last film completed in the East German film studio before the end of the GDR. About the price of compromise and institutional reform, it paints a poignant portrait of the last generation of East German filmmakers.

Discussion with Peter Kahane will follow.

Co-sponsored by Eastman School of Music—Humanities and University of Rochester departments of Modern Languages, History, Film Studies, and Visual Cultural Studies.
