(W. S. Van Dyke, US 1940, 94 min., 35mm)

Jeanette MacDonald. MacDonald’s second full-color feature is her seventh with frequent costar Nelson Eddy. On the evening of her engagement party, Sarah Millick (MacDonald) abandons her fiancé to run away with her music teacher and composer, Carl Linden (Eddy). Sarah inspires Carl to finish his operetta, and the couple are happy, initially. When Carl fails to sell his music and have it produced, money becomes a problem and the two are forced to become street musicians. Sarah is discovered, but at a price that may be too high.
