Year Without a Summer. Forced into directing the sequel, Whale arguably betters his original with this allegorical horror classic. Boris Karloff delivers a multilayered, emotive performance from under 62 pounds of makeup and costume. Colin Clive repeats his role as the tortured Dr. Frankenstein, and Ernest Thesiger provides a touch of the perverse as Dr. Pretorius, in a film many consider the greatest of horror movies.
