The Dark Crystal

Sunday, June 5, 2016, 2 p.m., Dryden Theatre

(Jim Henson and Frank Oz, US/UK 1982, 93 min., 35mm)

Dryden Kids. In a distant galaxy and ancient past, orphan Jen, a Gelfling, begins a heroic journey to restore a missing shard to the Dark Crystal. If he fails, the evil birdlike lizards Skekses will control the universe. The film marks a collaboration with famed illustrator and conceptual designer Brian Froud. Leaving Kermit and Co. behind, Henson, Oz, and their Muppet crew have handcrafted a thoroughly convincing new universe that pays homage to J. R. R. Tolkien, the Brothers Grimm, and Joseph Campbell, and seems all the more beautiful and refreshing today in an era of omnipresent digital imagery.

Presented in partnership with The Strong: National Museum of Play. Members receive a $2 discount on admission.
