Boom Town (35mm)

Saturday, September 27, 2025, 2 p.m., Dryden Theatre

(Jack Conway, US 1940, 119 min., 35mm)

Re-teaming Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert, who both won Academy Awards for It Happened One Night, this brawling Western drama is the last of three times Gable would work with both Colbert and Spencer Tracy. Oil partners Big John and Square John (Gable and Tracy, respectively) hit it big, but discover they are in love with the same woman, Betsy (Colbert). The Johns split, one getting the girl, the other getting the oil. Years later they are brought together again as rivals when Big John gets taken in by a wheeler dealer and his seductive companion (Lionel Atwill and Hedy Lamarr). His only chance to stay out of jail may just be his old partner and his feelings for Betsy.
