Brad Gault (Mark Stevens), private investigator, has relocated to New York City after spending two years in a California prison for vehicular manslaughter and has hired Kathleen Stewart (Lucille Ball) to be his secretary. After being warned by a New York detective to walk the line, Brad and Kathleen are followed by a man in a white suit (William Bendix) who claims to have been hired by Tony Jardine, Brad’s ex-partner. Brad investigates the connection, which leads him to wealthy art dealer Hardy Cathcart (Clifton Webb). When Brad is framed for a murder, he and Kathleen must tie up all the loose ends before the police find him.
