Eve’s Bayou

Thursday, October 9, 2025, 7:30 p.m., Dryden Theatre

(Kasi Lemmons, US 1997, 115 min., DCP)

Actor turned director Kasi Lemmons made her feature debut with this film, touted by Roger Ebert as the best of the year. In 1960s Louisiana, doctor Louis Batiste (Samuel L. Jackson, who also produced the film) is caught in one of his frequent trysts by his ten-year-old daughter, Eve (Jurnee Smollett), shattering her world. Turning to her sister and her aunt for guidance, Eve becomes even more confused as she begins to question the nature of memory and reality. Filmed in lush, southern gothic tones, the film features an all-star cast, also including Lynn Whitfield, Diahann Carroll, and Vondie Curtis-Hall.
