(Stanley Kubrick, US/UK 1987, 116 min., 35mm)
Museum Treasures | New 35mm Print. Adapted from a novel by Gustav Hasford, Stanley Kubrick’s stunning war movie takes us from a nightmarish Marine training session on Parris Island to the hell of Vietnam. Another Kubrickian study of the perfect plan gone awry, the film focuses in its first half on the attempts of Drill Instructor Hartman (Lee Ermey) to make soldiers of his new recruits, including Privates Joker (Matthew Modine) and Pyle (Vincent D’Onofrio). The second half shows the totalitarian order of boot camp dissolving into complete chaos as the marines are deployed into a different kind of battle. Premiere screening of a brand-new 35mm print from the museum’s collection!
