(Boris Barnet, USSR 1927, 60 min., 35mm)
Lost in the better-remembered post-revolutionary cinema of the USSR, director Boris Barnet is perhaps the ideal representation of the populist cinema of the country at that time. A light-hearted romantic comedy, country girl Natasha (Anna Sten) marries student Ilya (Ivan Koval-Samborsky) simply to circumvent Moscow’s rigid housing laws and be able to afford a room together. Spending time together endears Ilya to Natasha, but an abandoned lottery ticket may change their lives forever.
