Godzilla, Mothra, and King Gidorah: All-Out Monsters Attack
(Gojira Mosura Kingu Gidora Daikaijû sôkôgeki, Shûsuke Kaneko, Japan 2001, 105 min., 35mm, Dubbed into English)
Godzilla Minus One
(Gojira -1.0, Takashi Yamakaki, Japan 2023, DCP, Japanese with English subtitles)
Part of the enduring legacy of Godzilla is the fact that each era of filmmaking takes the character back to its roots, identifying the kaiju as a malevolent force devastating the coast of Japan. In our first film (colloquially known as GMK by its fans), Godzilla represents the accumulation of vengeful souls from World War II, ready to forcibly remind a nation that has moved on from the wounds of its past. All that stands against him are the three guardians of Japan: Mothra, King Ghidorah, and Baragon. Our second film takes the legend of Godzilla back to the aftermath of World War II, as a failed Kamikaze pilot leads a hopeless defense of Japan from the beast born of war and nuclear radiation. Two great films for the price of one!
