James Jones’s debut novel won the National Book Award and was inspired by his experiences stationed in Hawaii in 1941. In a sprawling narrative, Robert “Prew” Prewitt (Montgomery Clift) obtains a transfer to Hawaii where his new captain (Philip Ober) attempts to recruit Prew to the company boxing team. When Prew refuses, the captain gets the other men to make his life a living hell. Meanwhile, Sergeant Warden (Burt Lancaster) starts seeing the captain’s wife (Deborah Kerr), Prew’s friend Maggio (Frank Sinatra) fends off aggression from Sergeant Judson (Ernest Borgnine), and Prew begins spending time with a hostess at the local bar (Donna Reed). Meanwhile, the looming Pacific conflict threatens to change their lives forever.

About This Series

James Jones Adaptations

American novelist James Jones (1921-1977) is best known for penning novels based on his experiences during, and just after the second world war. He witnessed the attack on Pearl Harbor, which inspired his debut novel, From Here to Eternity. He later served on Guadalcanal, which he turned into The Thin Red Line, and Some Came Running was based on his experiences after returning home from the war.

Frank Being Frank

After a long career in the music industry and then in romantic musicals, Frank Sinatra made a big change in his career in the 1950s. Starting with From Here to Eternity in 1953, Sinatra sought out dramatic roles to lengthen his career as his voice changed and weakened. He immediately found success and an Academy Award in that supporting role and continued his film career without looking back.
