(Jack Conway, US 1941, 105 min., 35mm)
The first of four films to team Clark Gable and Lana Turner, Gable is Candy Johnson, a small-time con-man who worms his way into the hearts and minds of Yellow Creek, Nevada, including the judge’s daughter, Elizabeth (Turner). As Candy opens a successful saloon, still using his extra-legal experience, Elizabeth tries to change his ways, but he may be having a more profound effect on her. A rip-roaring romantic dramedy, the film features a bevy of Warner Bros. stars, including Frank Morgan, Claire Trevor, Marjorie Main, and Chill Wills.
