(Clarence Brown, US 1939, 107 min., 35mm)
M-G-M once again attempts to capture the magic of Grand Hotel with a group of disparate travelers trapped in a European resort, led by Clark Gable and Norma Shearer. Harry and Irene (Gable and Shearer) traveled with a telepathy act after World War I. Years later, as Harry is touring Europe with his song-and-dance team, a woman who looks suspiciously like Irene shows up with a Russian accent on the arm of a weapons dealer. With rumors of a new war in the air, Harry tries to re-connect with Irene before they are forced to leave the country. Director Clarence Brown, a frequent Gable collaborator, assembles a cast that includes Edward Arnold, Charles Coburn, and Burgess Meredith.
