A Night at the Opera

Sunday, December 30, 2018, 1:30 p.m., Dryden Theatre

(Sam Wood, US 1935, 96 min., 35mm)

Always at the Dryden. In this Marx Brothers send-up of stage life and high society, Groucho is Otis B. Driftwood, a gold digger who has been hired by Mrs. Claypool to introduce her to society. Meanwhile, star-crossed singers Ricardo and Rosa only have eyes for each other while she fends off the advances of the star of the opera, Lasspari. Driftwood, Lasspari’s dresser (Harpo), and Ricardo’s manager (Chico) have a plan to get the lovebirds together as the production moves to New York City—but the plan won’t work without a typical amount of Marx Brothers mayhem.
