Outrage (16mm)

Wednesday, March 18, 2026, 7:30 p.m., Dryden Theatre

(Ida Lupino, US 1950, 75 min., 16mm)

Less than a year after getting her first chance to direct filling in when Elmer Clifton fell ill on the set of Not Wanted, Ida Lupino tackled this story of sexual assault, its aftermath, and the societal reaction to it, from a script by Lupino and her husband, Collier Young. Ann Walton (Mala Powers) is a bookkeeper who is about to be engaged. When she is stalked and attacked one night after staying late at work, her life is changed forever. Ann sees the world differently and believes that the world sees her differently as well, leading her to push away her family and her fiancee and run away. A direct but sensitive approach to a subject not addressed in mainstream film, Lupino allows us to get inside Ann’s heart and mind with her camerawork.
