Splice Here: A Projected Odyssey

(Rob Murphy, Australia 2022, 117 min., DCP)

“Film is dead!” was the mantra that accompanied the dawn of digital cinema. But was it really true? For those who worked with film, it was clear that the digital experience and film simply weren’t the same thing. A decade ago, projectionist and filmmaker Rob Murphy decided to engage the debate with this film, asking the people who would really know: his fellow projectionists. Does film have a future and how will our treasured movie memories live on? The world of the underground projectionist is a passionate and clandestine place, and over time it became clear that this disenfranchised community was not just collecting film and memorabilia, but saving titles from extinction. Connecting with collectors and projectionists from around Australia, seeing film projected in large cinemas and backyards, and documenting the mammoth effort to refit theaters for screenings of Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, Murphy concludes that we may be the last generation to be able to experience great cinema as it was meant to be seen: on film.
