(David Lynch, US 1990, 125 min., 35mm)
Part twisted fairy tale, part Bonnie and Clyde, this Palme d’Or winner takes the American road movie to outlandish new heights. Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern star as Sailor and Lula, an insatiable pair of outlaw lovers on a cross-country pilgrimage to California. With only their love to live on, Sailor strikes up a shady deal to pull a heist with the devilish Bobby Peru (Willem Dafoe), sending the couple into an intense downward spiral. A huge supporting cast including Diane Ladd, Harry Dean Stanton, Crispin Glover, and Isabella Rossellini populate the film as the distinctively Lynchian, esoteric characters that Sailor and Lula encounter on their crazed, surreal journey across America’s heartland.
