This is the ultimate alternative to factory-made black and white film. The basics of making gelatin emulsion dry plates are covered in this fun and informative emulsion workshop for beginners. The group will learn how to make the silver bromide emulsion from raw materials followed by coating their own 4x5″ glass plates. Exposures will be made with a view camera in the historic gardens of the George Eastman Museum. The participants will develop their plates in our spacious darkroom. The final plates will be scanned and inverted digitally to allow them to be seen as a positive image.
Participants will receive a manual with formulas written by Mark Osterman and Nick Brandreth on making the featured emulsion. This workshop also includes a visit to the Department of Photography to view vintage landscape prints made by Ansel Adams, Gustave Le Gray, Eadweard Muybridge, Carleton Watkins, and many more.
