The Great Gatsby

Saturday, May 19, 2018, 7:30 p.m., Dryden Theatre

(Baz Luhrmann, US 2013, 142 min., 35mm)

Eastman Entertains. Mysterious Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), a nouveau riche established in Long Island in the roaring 1920s, is seen through the eyes of his modest neighbor, Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire). When Nick receives a personal invitation to one of Gatsby’s magnificent parties, he soon finds out that Gatsby is actually quite intrigued by one of his relatives, his charming married cousin Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan). This newest adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s famous 1925 novel clearly reflects Luhrmann’s cinematic style: colorful, eccentric, and musical. Also worth noting is the all-star soundtrack featuring artists such as Jay-Z, Beyoncé, and Lana Del Rey, whether loudly accompanying the splendid festivities in Gatsby’s mansion or conveying the character’s feelings.
