Late Autumn

Tuesday, April 26, 2016, 8 p.m., Dryden Theatre

(Akibiyori, Yasujiro Ozu, Japan 1960, 128 min., 35mm, Japanese w/subtitles)

In one of Ozu’s last films, a young woman is prodded to marry by her late father’s friends and her mother (Setsuko Hara in an inversion of her famous role in Late Spring). With his careful inspection of the social and family tensions that arise between love and individual will, the director personifies the action in the story through an effective use of color and a controlled camera, while imbuing entire film with sparkles of delightful comedy.

Introduction will be interpreted.
