(Michael Powell, Emeric Pressburger, UK 1948, 134 min., 35mm)
Always at the Dryden | Nitrate Picture Show Festival Favorite | 70th Anniversary. One of the most popular screenings at the 4th Nitrate Picture Show was this Powell and Pressburger Technicolor classic, culled from two separate prints held at the museum. Moira Shearer is radiant as Vicki Page, a young dancer torn between the obsession of a ballet impresario (Anton Walbrook) and her love for a burgeoning composer (Marius Goring). Highlighted by a fifteen-minute lyrical Technicolor ballet sequence halfway through the film, the original nitrate print is the best way to see it, voted one of the best British films ever created. Come help us send the year out in style! (And stay tuned for what the 5th Nitrate Picture Show has in store in May 2019.)
