(Le retour du héros, Laurent Tirard, France 2018, 90 min., DCP, French w/subtitles)

Rochester Premiere. Jean Dujardin (The Artist) brings his comic sensibility to the role of Captain Neuville, a womanizing soldier set to marry the young Pauline before being called off to the front of the Napoleonic Wars. He promises to write Pauline every day, but she receives no word from the front. Pauline’s sister, Elizabeth (Mélanie Laurent), fearing the worst, takes up the captain’s correspondence to let Pauline down easy. Years later, when Neuville returns broke and disheveled, Elizabeth needs to think fast to synthesize the legend she has created with the man who has returned. Rooted in French farce and American screwball, this period comedy serves up the best Dujardin role in years.
