Focus 45: Todd Gustavson: Toy Cameras and Camera Toys
Cameras designed for and marketed to children have been available since the introduction of commercially manufactured gelatin dry plates in the late 1880s. Simple box camera designs were replaced in the 1930s as plastic molding technology combined with simple optics and easy handling to create enticing, fun cameras. Although the sizes, shapes, and type of media used have changed over the years, the goal of toy cameras has always been the same, to introduce young people to photography.
