Camera Obscura, Physionotrace, and the Silhouette
Tuition: $700 / $600 members, $80 materials fee
This four-day course is the only public workshop in the world that teaches how to use a box camera obscura, a tent camera obscura, a camera lucida, a pantograph, and a physionotrace to produce landscape pencil drawings and cut silhouettes. All of these pre-photographic drawing techniques are based on the manipulation of light, and they helped to reinforce the concepts that eventually led to the invention of photography.
The Imperfect Tintype
Tuition: $700/600 for members, $90 materials fee
Do you love the flaws you see in many contemporary tintypes and wish you could make images with those unique markings? For some, these distressed tintypes follow the Japanese wabi-sabi concept of accepting imperfection, impermanence, and incompleteness.
Evolution of Photography
In this three-day workshop, participants will attend several illustrated lectures on the evolution of the photographic process from its beginnings in the 1830s through the digital age. We’ll include the major photographic processes used in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Each lecture class will be followed by viewing notable examples of prints and plates by the masters of photography from the museum’s photography collection.
