For more than twenty years, artist Lorna Bieber has made the world of reproduced photographic images the subject of her work. Trained as a painter, she became interested in the photographic image as subject while working in the art department and then as a photo editor for large-circulation magazines in the late 1980s.

Catherine Opie: 700 Nimes Road presents recent work by Los Angeles–based artist Catherine Opie, one of the essential figures in contemporary photography. Taken over the course of six months at the Bel Air, California, residence of Elizabeth Taylor (1932–2011), the photographs in the exhibition are selected from two series, Closets and Jewels and 700 Nimes Road. Inspired by William Eggleston’s images of Elvis Presley’s Memphis estate, Graceland, Opie creates a portrait of Taylor from her personal space and mementos.

Photographer John Chiara to kick off George Eastman House’s annual Wish You Were Here photography lecture series

George Eastman House announced the fall lineup for its Wish You Were Here photography lecture series. The series will begin on Thursday, September 10 at 6 p.m., with John Chiara’s talk Lands End, which features images taken with his life-size camera obscura. Admission to this lecture is free for students (with valid ID). A book signing will follow in the museum’s café and store.

George Eastman House will host two events on Sunday, September 20 as part of the First Niagara Rochester Fringe Festival. The Company Stores, a folk fusion band from Charleston, West Virginia, will perform at 11 a.m. (tickets $10). Vivien Leigh: The Last Press Conference, a play produced by Screen Plays Theater will be presented at 2 p.m. (tickets $15). Both performances will be held in the Dryden Theatre, 900 East Avenue. Brian Ulrich: The Centurion to premiere at George Eastman Museum

An artist drawn to exploring the visual landscape of America’s consumption economy, Ulrich has spent the last several years photographing sites and people associated with extreme wealth. This exhibition of 23 of his recent photographs will be on view in the museum’s Project Gallery through February 14, 2016.
