(Natalie Portman, Israel/USA 2015, 95 min., Hebrew w/ subtitles)

Rochester International Jewish Film Festival. A Tale of Love and Darkness is based on the acclaimed and award-winning memoir by Amos Oz, one of Israel’s most celebrated writers. Natalie Portman wrote the screenplay, directs, and stars in this intimate family drama, set against the backdrop of war-torn Jerusalem just a few years after World War II. The story is told through the eyes of a young boy whose coming-of-age is shaped by a devastating family tragedy, and then as the grown man who leaves the constraints of his family and community to join a kibbutz, change his name, marry and have children, and becomes an iconic writer and an active participant in the political life of his nation.
