(Stanley Donen, UK 1967, 111 min., 35mm)

Albert Finney. Albert Finney and a luminous Audrey Hepburn (in what some fans consider her finest performance) are bickering married couple Mark and Joanna, visiting the North of France for the celebration of one of Mark’s clients. As they make the trip, they reflect on their relationship—which we see in flashback—from their first meeting to their early marriage and the difficulties of maintaining a mature relationship. The superb direction from Stanley Donen and the sterling script by Frederic Raphael (who cowrote Eyes Wide Shut) artfully evokes both the thrill of young romance, as well as the hardships and rewards of married life.
