Once Upon a Time . . . at the Dryden. Loosely based on Jacqueline Susann’s 1966 novel of the same title, Valley of the Dolls follows the paths of several women through the trials and hardships of life in show business. Featuring Barbara Parkins, Patty Duke, Sharon Tate, and Susan Hayward, this dramatic tale delves into unfaithful relationships, drug dependency, and jealousy as each woman fights her way to fame. Judy Garland was originally cast in the Susan Hayward role, but was fired before filming began due to misbehavior. Some believe that Patty Duke’s character was based, at least in part, on Judy Garland and her real-life pill addiction.
