Bergman’s second masterpiece of 1957 features Victor Sjöström in his final screen performance as a widowed physician who is forced to re-evaluate his life on a car ride to receive the title of doctor jubilaris. Accompanied by his pregnant daughter-in-law, he encounters two sets of hitchhikers who remind him of his past life.
