(George Cukor, US 1949, 101 min., 35mm)
Seven Kuchars for Seven Cukors. This sophisticated screwball pits husband and wife against each other as unbending district attorney Spencer Tracy and talented lawyer Katharine Hepburn try an attempted murder case involving Judy Holliday as a jealous lover with a knack for mishandling handguns. Adam’s Rib is generally regarded as the best of the Hepburn-Tracy collaborations, as well as perhaps the quintessential “Battle of the Sexes” comedy.
Preceded by Pussy on a Hot Tin Roof (George Kuchar, US 1961, 4 min., 16mm), a film “glowing with embers of desire and smoking with the revelation of men and women longing for robust temptations that will make them sizzle into maturity with a furnace-blast of unrestraint animalism.” – George Kuchar.
