(Stanley Kubrick, UK/US 1971, 136 min., 35mm)
Museum Treasures | Primal Screen. Almost half a century after its release, Kubrick’s most successful film at the box office is still his most controversial. The director himself decided to withdraw it from circulation in the UK after a series of criminal acts allegedly inspired by Anthony Burgess’s dystopian view of a society torn between violence and repression. For the history of cinema, this is also a tour de force in expressionist style, brilliantly complemented by the electronic soundtrack by Wendy Carlos.
The George Eastman Museum is proud to present a mint 35mm print, struck from the preservation elements held by Warner Bros. and acquired for our collection through a generous gift from a museum trustee. Introduction by Paolo Cherchi Usai, Senior Curator, Moving Image Department.
