(Charles Vidor, US 1952, 112 min., 35mm)

A fictionalized biography of the famed fabelist, Danny Kaye stars as Hans Christian Andersen, whose career starts out on a sour note. Accused of being a distraction for schoolchildren who love his stories, Hans is banished from his hometown and travels to Copenhagen to find work as a cobbler. There he meets and falls in love with a beautiful ballerina who may not be available to him. Filled with energetic performances by Kaye to songs written by Frank Loesser, the film also features origin stories for many of Andersen’s fables, including “The Ugly Duckling,” “Thumbelina,” “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” and “The Little Mermaid.”
