(Hugh Hudson, UK 1981, 125 min., DCP)
Based on the true story of two British athletes competing in the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris. Cambridge-educated Englishman Harold Abrahams (Ben Cross) overcomes anti-Semitism and class prejudice in order to compete against the "Flying Scotsman", Eric Liddell (Ian Charleson), a devout Scottish missionary, in the 100 meter race. Harold views competitive running as a way to break through the prejudice he experiences while Eric hopes that the race will give him a greater platform to spread his teachings. Yet as the Olympics approach, each man will have both his faith and his mettle tested. An early example of the lavish British costume drama, this film would not have had the same impact without the stirring electronic score by the Greek composer Vangelis.
