Hour of the Gun (1967)

Director John Sturges returns to the O.K. Corral for this reinvention a decade after Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Here, James Garner plays Wyatt Earp and Jason Robards plays Doc Holliday, and the film starts with the gunfight, exploring the aftermath of the famous incident. After the shootout, Ike Clanton (Robert Ryan) seeks to have the Earp brothers brought to trial for murdering his brother. Despite this, the Earps seek re-election as Marshalls in Tombstone, leading to a tragic end. With a star on his chest, Wyatt tracks down the rest of the Clanton gang and compatriots, with Holliday at his side.

From the time of the incident in 1881, the gunfight at the O.K. Corral became a legendary event signaling the demise of the Old West. Newspaper reports, pulp novels, sketches, and paintings all depicted the events of that day. Motion pictures were no exception, particularly after Wyatt Earp’s death in 1929.

Crashing into the 60s: Film Posters from the Collection

The George Eastman Museum is celebrating its diamond anniversary with an exhibition of film posters from the 1960s, completely from its own collection. This series connects to and expands upon the posters in the exhibition, providing a glimpse into the cinema during this decade of change.
