MEMBER MOVIE NIGHT | Ingeborg Holm

Tuesday, November 22, 2022, 7:30 p.m., Dryden Theatre

(Victor Sjöström, Sweden 1913, 96 min., 16mm)

Director Victor Sjöström’s earliest surviving film, Ingeborg Holm is an excellent example of the social realist movement in Sweden at the time. Sven Holm (Aron Lindgren) opens a grocery store and life is good for his wife, Ingeborg (Hilda Borgström) and their three children. But when Sven becomes sick and dies, Ingeborg tries to keep the store herself. A lazy, wasteful staff leads to financial losses and Ingeborg is forced to close. With no money left, she is forced to move to the poor-house and is separated from her children. Desperate to see her children, Ingeborg has to resort to drastic measures.

Live piano accompaniment by Dr. Philip C. Carli.
