(Satyajit Ray, India 1955, 125 min., 35mm, Bengali w/subtitles)
The first installment in Ray’s seminal trilogy focuses on a poor Brahmin family in a remote village in Bengal. While the father (Kanu Banerjee) is frequently away desperately trying to provide for his family, the mother (Karuna Banerjee) struggles to raise her mischievous daughter Durga (Uma Das Gupta) and newborn son Apu (Subir Banerjee) and care for her elderly cousin Indir (Chunibala Devi). Although the film deals with the harsh struggle for survival, it projects respect for human dignity.
