(Anthony Mann, US 1948, 79 min., 35mm)
In this thriller, a battle of wits and wills takes place between two criminals, with the lives of two women in the balance. Joe Sullivan (Dennis O’Keefe) is serving time in jail for a burglary rap he took for Rick Coyle (Raymond Burr). Joe’s girlfriend Pat (Claire Trevor) tells him there is a plan to break him out of prison, but it is a cover to get Joe out of the way. After a successful escape, he goes on the run with Pat and Ann (Marsha Hunt), his attorney’s assistant, all the while evading the police and hatching a plan to get his share of the money from Rick. Directed by the incomparable Anthony Mann, this film is filled with the style we have come to expect from film noir.
